7 myths about the Challenger shuttle disaster

7 myths about the Challenger shuttle disaster

The Space Shuttle Challenger was destroyed 73 seconds after liftoff on January 28, 1986.

Though I was in school, I didn't see it happen. My school couldn't afford the satellite required to receive the live broadcast. Instead, we heard of the disaster from our teacher.

When I got home, I tuned into the news to watch the shuttle disintegrate over and over again on TV. It was very saddening.

But even at ten years old, I knew that space exploration was risky. I wanted to be an astronaut when I grew up (still do, some days) and I was intensely interested in astronomy and space exploration (still am).

Here's to those brave individuals who voluntarily risk their lives to broaden our understanding of the Universe.

Support the astronauts.
